DOC NYC Associate Director of Filmmaker & Industry Initiatives

Statement of Work

The DOC NYC Associate Director of Filmmaker & Industry Initiatives oversees outreach, recruitment and selections for the following festival honors and programs:

  • The annual 40 Under 40 list recognizing notable emerging filmmakers
  • The Documentary New Leaders leadership program for rising industry stars
  • The Industry Roundtables (formerly known as “Only In New York”) meeting forum for filmmakers with works-in-progress
  • The Storytelling Incubator mentorship program for first-time filmmakers

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining and further developing a roster of engaged peer and partner organizations in the documentary and independent media fields, whose partnership activities support recruitment and submissions to the above filmmaker programs and can broadly enhance DOC NYC’s opportunities for inter-organizational collaboration and cross-promotion. Focus will be on maintaining relationships with current partners and growing new relationships among priority communities, and in priority regions, for the festival.
  • Directing outreach and recruitment efforts for the above programs, particularly as they intersect with DOC NYC’s equity, diversity and inclusion mandates. Focus will be on expanding awareness of DOC NYC’s initiatives for all creators in this field. Special emphasis will be placed on broadening, and making more inclusive, the submissions, nominations, and recruitment pipeline for these initiatives, so as to expand access to and representation of historically underrepresented or marginalized groups, including BIPOC, LGBTQ+, undocumented, and differently-abled filmmakers.
  • Coordinating the selection process for Industry Roundtables, including pre-screening submissions and recommending finalist projects for selection.
  • Overseeing the execution of meeting matches for Industry Roundtables, including management of invitations and securing participation of industry decision-makers and film teams, and the subcontracting of an Industry Roundtables coordinator who will manage all logistics and schedules and execute filmmaker and decisionmaker communications in preparation for roundtable meetings during the festival dates in November.
  • Coordinating the Storytelling Incubator mentorship program, in collaboration with the Video Consortium, including oversight of the mentor selection program, partnership communications with the Video Consortium, creation of internal and outward-facing communications about the program, and measurement of the program’s impact, both short- and long-term.
  • Offering programmatic support for the Documentary New Leaders cohort, including participating in the nomination and selection process for a 2023 class of New Leaders, facilitating gatherings of the 2022 cohort; cultivating guest speakers, overseeing communication with members of the cohort; adapting existing  program in response to cohort’s needs and feedback; and programming and/or facilitating in-person festival meeting(s) of the cohort.
  • Creating copy for above initiatives to be used in press releases and publications; as well as uploading content to website’s relevant landing pages, using Airtable as main collection hub.

Compensation for this role is $32,000.
