Peacock’s new documentary, High Horse: The Black Cowboy, executive produced by Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions, premieres on Peacock on Thursday, November 20. This three-part pop culture and historical documentary confronts and reclaims the Wild West while revealing the story of the Black cowboy — a history that has largely been untold. Featuring original interviews with Jordan Peele, Bun B, Blanco Brown, Pam Grier, Lori Harvey, INK, Tina Knowles, Rick Ross, Glynn Turman, Lynae Vanee and The Compton Cowboys. With an original score by Raphael Saadiq, this series sets the record straight on the American Frontier.

This screening will sneak-preview 101: IMAGE: F*uck Westerns: From Bass Reeves, the real Lone Ranger, to rodeo legend Bill Pickett and fearless Stagecoach Mary, Black pioneers shaped the Frontier. The Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo keeps that fire alive as today's Black cowboys and cowgirls redefine history.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A, moderated by Gary Hamilton (Associated Press), with executive producer Keisha Senter (Senior Vice President of Culture and Impact, Monkeypaw Productions), executive producer and supervising editor Mari Keiko Gonzalez, co-executive producer and director Jason Perez, actor Glynn Turman, and recording artist Bun B.

Screening co-presented by NBCUniversal, Peacock and Monkeypaw Productions

Screening and panel co-presented by The Lost Shtetl Museum

DOC NYC and The Lost Shtetl Museum present the NY Premiere of Extinguished Lives (Lithuania/USA, 14 min), a hybrid documentary short examining a little-known story of the Holocaust by bullets—the murder of Lithuanian Jews by Nazis and their local collaborators in the forests surrounding hundreds of shtetls. Based on survivor testimony, the film follows a young woman who must choose between staying with her family or saving herself.

Following the film, a panel moderated by DOC NYC Executive Director Raphaela Neihausen will discuss the need (or not) for Holocaust films in 2025. Panelists include Extinguished Lives director Roberta Grossman, The Lost Shtetl Museum consultant Prof. Sam Kassow, filmmaker Denis Dobrovoda (The Consequences of Truth), and Exhibit Designer Büke Kumyol (RAA).

In our first-ever collaboration, DOC NYC is partnering with Creatively Speaking, a program of the New School’s Institute on Race, Power & Political Economy to present HOME OF THE BRAVE, a powerful program of five documentary shorts exploring urgent social issues shaping America today. From legal justice and life after incarceration to progressive education and compassionate healthcare, these stories of grassroot activism showcase individuals and communities working to create meaningful change. Uplifting and inspiring, the program celebrates resilience, empathy, and the transformative power of advocacy—showing how courage and collective action can light the path toward a more just and compassionate society. - Karen McMullen

This shorts program screens at Tishman Auditorium, 63 Fifth Ave.
