Director, Homegrown
Michael is an awarding-winning journalist, filmmaker, and artist. His work spans film, radio, theater, installation and photography. His most recent feature film, Homegrown, premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival in the Venice Critics Week section. It has won numerous awards including a 2026 duPont-Columbia Award, one of the most prestigious awards in broadcast journalism.
He directed the award-winning short film and photo exhibition Water Warriors (POV), a story about a community’s successful resistance to the oil and gas industry. It has since been rebroadcasted hundreds of times by PBS stations across the country, including annually in November. He also co-directed the participatory documentary Sandy Storyline (Jury Award winner at the Tribeca Film Festival), the site-specific performance Sanctuary (The Working Theater), and the PBS series Veterans Coming Home. Michael has directed, produced, and co-written original film, radio, and theater with numerous companies including The Foundry Theater, The Civilians, and the Peabody Award-winning StoryCorps on NPR. Michael’s photography has appeared in publications like The Village Voice, The New York Times, and Het Parool. He has been an artist-in-residence with Camargo Foundation, The Laundromat Project and the National Resource Defense Council. He is the recipient of an NBC News Studios Original Voices Fellowship, a Creative Capital Award, A Blade of Grass Artist Files Fellowship, and a New York State Council on the Arts Individual Artist Award.

From Concept to Pitch: A Workshop for Emerging Filmmakers
Thurs., July 16. 10-4pm. IFC Center (NYC)In this full-day, in-person workshop designed by filmmakers with deep expertise, emerging directors and producers will learn essential phases of documentary development: crafting your story, building trust with participants, exploring creative funding strategies and pitching your project for funding.
By the end of the day, you will have a stronger sense of where your film is headed and what needs your attention next whether that’s story development, relationship-building, or preparing to seek funding. You’ll also leave having spent the day in a room with people who understand the challenges and power of doc filmmaking, and who you can stay in conversation with as you keep moving forward.

Emmy Award-winning director Contessa Gayles (Songs From The Hole) will show you how to find and sharpen the core of your story and make deliberate choices about structure and voice.
Trust Building with Communities and Participants
Director Michael Premo (Homegrown) and DOC NYC’s Malikkah Rollins will explore how to build trust with your participants and communities at the center of your story.
Creative Funding Ideas
Producer Sarah Rachel Wainio (The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson) will present creative funding strategies beyond the traditional grant route with approaches that give you more agency and control over your project.
Pitching for Funding
Industry leader Monika Navarro will break down what it takes to pitch for funding: the language you need, the approach that works, and the timing that matters.
