Today at DOC NYC

November 08, 2011

Join Grammy-nominated entertainer Michael Feinstein for a post-screening conversation at The Sound of Mumbai: A Musical, discover this year’s DOC NYC award winners at the gala and awards presentation of The Island President, and see more great films, Tuesday at DOC NYC.

Billed as by Indie wire as “One of the surprise hits to come out of Telluride and Toronto…a strong candidate for the Oscar documentary short list,” The Island President–feature film for tonight’s gala and awards presentation–tells the story of President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives, a man confronting a problem greater than any other world leader has ever faced–the literal survival of his country and everyone in it.

The archipelago nation of the Maldives, off India’s coast, looks like paradise. But the country risks being submerged underwater before the end of the century unless climate change is reversed. That sets a clear mission for the charismatic President Nasheed, who fought a dictatorship for twenty years to be elected at age 41. With stunning cinematography and music by Radiohead, director Jon Shenk follows Nasheed in his first year in office as he lobbies other countries to help save his threatened homeland.

Screening followed by discussion with director Jon Shenk and Oscar–winning filmmaker Michael Moore.

Musical-lovers will want to see today’s screening of The Sound of Mumbai: A Musical, which will be followed by a discussion with Grammy-nominated entertainer Michael Feinstein and director Sarah McCartney.
