Students learn to make films by making films. Intensive hands-on Conservatory and MFA programs in Documentary Filmmaking, as well as short-term workshops, pair rigorous instruction with mentoring in order to support students as they work on a series of their own documentary films. Under the guidance of a world-class faculty, this approach has earned NYFA a slot on The Independent’s list of the “10 Best Academic Programs for Documentary Filmmakers,” with graduates garnering an Academy Award®-nomination, an Emmy® Award and top honors at major festivals.
NYFA’s showcase includes: Atomic Love (USA, 17 min., Yusaku Kanagawa) recounts how a Hiroshima orphan and an enemy soldier became tentative friends. Home Free (USA, 15 min., Marie Vanderrusten) profiles Jack the bubble man, who has lived in Central Park for years. Rebecca, battling the fable of the Big Bad Wolf, struggles to release young Mexican Gray wolves back into the wild in Little Red Lie (USA, 13 min., Mariko Ide). Venezuelan journalist Braulio Jatar (USA, 10 min., Braulio Jatar) has a “capture order” on his head. When the ruins of the submerged city, Jaguaribara (USA, 17 min., Lucas Dantas), reappear after a drought, the filmmaker searches for his lost ancestral home.
