WHAT IS CINEMA?

NYC PREMIERE Chuck Workman is best known for creating unforgettable Oscar montage sequences, including the “In Memoriam” segments. In What is Cinema? he demonstrates his command of cinematic language, creating a visual essay out of clips from films that pushed the boundaries of the art form. He weaves in new interviews with eclectic filmmakers from David Lynch to Jonas Mekas to Michael Moore, and draws upon archival interviews with the likes of Alfred Hitchcock and Chantal Akerman.

“Commentary from filmmakers and programmers offers insight, but the real treat here is the juxtaposition of clips: a hall-of-mirrors tour that is a cinephile’s nocturnal emission.”Time Out New York
