From tyranny and torture to taboo subjects like class and race, filmmakers discuss their strategies for translating tough human and civil rights struggles into engaging films; balancing storytelling with activism and taking on extreme situations like protecting the safety of your featured characters. Moderated by Judith Helfand & Wendy Ettinger (Chicken & Egg Pictures).

Panelists include:

Lisa Collins is the director of the documentary work-in-progress Oscar’s Comeback, which has received support from NYSCA; Chicken & Egg Pictures; Vital Projects Fund; Sundance Documentary Fund among others.

Kristi Jacobson’s films include American Standoff (HBO, 2002) and TOOTS (National Board of Review 2007 Best Documentary).  Her current project, Hungry in America, is produced by Participant Media and will be released in 2012.

Holen Sabrina Kahn’s projects have addressed the Rwandan genocide, including Diplomatic Immunity, winner of the New York Film Festival’s Grand Marnier Award. Currently Director for Educational Innovation at Jacob Burns Film Center, she is also co-directing a feature documentary with Alessandra Zeka, A Quiet Inquisition.

Alison Klayman is a freelance journalist and documentary filmmaker. While in China from 2006-2010, she gained unprecedented access to Ai Weiwei. Klayman is a Sundance Documentary Fellow and was recently named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film”.

Sara Terry is a long-time documentary photographer and journalist, whose work has focused on post-conflict storytelling. Fambul Tok, which she directed and produced, is her first film. She is currently in production on her second doc, FOLK.
