YouTube and Docs: How Filmmakers Are Using the Platform
Thu., April 23. 12-1:15pm ET. Online.YouTube is no longer just a place to host a trailer; it’s become a real part of the documentary landscape, where filmmakers can share work, reach audiences directly, and test new ways of being seen over time. This session, featuring digital distributor Polly Haythornthwaite (Java Films), digital content manager Tiffany Fisher-Love, and others, looks at how doc filmmakers can approach YouTube thoughtfully, drawing from experience across documentary distribution and digital-first storytelling to consider where the platform might fit into a film’s broader life, not just its release moment.
The conversation focuses on what kinds of documentary stories resonate on YouTube, how filmmakers can build trust and connection with viewers, and which lessons from the creator economy translate for doc makers and which don’t. Expect a grounded discussion about experimentation, curated release strategies, and the real tradeoffs of meeting audiences where they already are, while staying true to documentary values and ways of working.
