Last week NYU SCPS held a reception for DOC NYC at the lovely Torch Club.  Mary Domowicz  (academic director of NYU SCPS’ Design, Digital Arts, and Film Programs) welcomed everyone to the event and was followed by Beth Kruvant – an award winning filmmaker (HEART OF STONE) and former SCPS student.  Kruvant spoke about how much she learned from Thom Powers’ “Documentary Development” class and credited Stranger Than Fiction for continuing her film education outside of the classroom.  She expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming DOC NYC as a much-needed event for both storytellers and audiences.

Powers, who has taught at SCPS for 10 years and is the DOC NYC Artistic Director, added brief remarks, describing the festival’s ambition to supply a meeting ground for documentary storytellers from multiple disciplines.

Among the documentary luminaries in attendance were two-time Academy Award winner Barbara Kopple, Judith Helfand of Chicken & Egg Pictures, and legendary George Stoney – going strong in his nineties!
