Land of Silence and Darkness

In the book Herzog on Herzog, the director says, “Land of Silence and Darkness is a film particularly close to my heart. If I had not have made it there would be a great gap in my existence.” The film follows Fini Straubinger, a fifty-six-year-old deaf and blind woman, who leads an inspiring life helping others with similar handicaps. Herzog shot only 3 hours of footage to craft the film. “This should be a lesson to filmmakers,” he said. “You need only guts to make films.”
