Special Guest Spotlight: Albie Sachs in Soft Vengeance

October 24, 2014

Appointed to the Constitutional Court of South Africa in 1994 by none other than Nelson Mandela, Albie Sachs gained national recognition during the 2005 case of Minister of Home Affairs vs. Fourie, in which the Court overthrew South Africa’s statute defining marriage to be between one man and one woman as a violation of the Constitution’s general mandate for equal protection for all and its specific mandate against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

Prior to serving in the courts, Sachs was exiled to England and Mozambique for his work as an activist in the freedom movement. Abby Ginzberg’s moving portrait, Soft Vengeance: Albie Sachs and the New South Africa, distills the nation’s turbulent history into the journey of one man. Don’t miss both Ginzberg and Sachs in person for their screening!
